Remedial & Sports Massage (RSM)

Whether you are suffering from long-term back pain or have recently been injured playing a sport, most musculoskeletal problems tend to result from:
  • Prolonged poor posture
  • Faulty body mechanics
  • Loss of strength and flexibility
  • Stressful living & poor working habits
These factors can all have a major influence on the physical state of your soft tissues, particularly in relation to activity.

RSM therapists use a variety of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation skills to address all of these issues and help promote healthy functioning of the whole body.

By combining massage skills with an advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology, I am able to influence specific structures such as muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments.  This can reduce pain, restore normal movement, help recovery from injury and correct postural problems.

What does it involve?
Using a range of techniques that include muscle stretching, soft tissue/deep tissue massage, joint mobilising and manipulation.

In order to get the treatment targeted to the right place I also need:
  • A detailed case history.
  • A posture and biomechanical assessment.
  • Time to discuss the findings so you feel happy you understand what is causing the problem and the best course of action available to you.
  • Homecare advice - stretching, strengthening and postural exercise.
The overall aim is to improve physical performance.  This is achieved by increasing flexibility, breaking down any adhesions, improving posture and stimulating the blood and lymphatic system.

REMEDIAL?  SPORTS? What's the difference?
Remedial massage helps people from all walks of life to remedy a wide variety of painful and restricting problems.  Within this broad framework is the more specialist area of Sports Massage.  This is effectively Remedial Massage work when used in a sports specific context.

Relaxation Massage

This will involve a variety of relaxing and therapeutically beneficial massage techniques which range in depth, direction and rhythm.  It can be used to help reduce pain and stress while improving tissue health, flexibility and range of motion.
The massage produces a number of physiological effects linked to hormone levels and circulation.

Relaxation massage can increase the release of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.
Endorphins are neurotransmitters which have similar effects to morphine in that they can reduce pain but also promote feelings of happiness and relaxation.

Relaxation massage can also decrease the release of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone released from the adrenal gland located on the kidney during times of threat as part of the “fight or flight” response. Long periods of high cortisol levels can leave the individual feeling anxious, stressed and even depressed. Massage can inhibit the release of cortisol which can enable the individual to feel a reduction in stress and anxiety and an improvement in relaxation.

Relaxation massage can stimulate blood circulation via vasodilation which can increase the temperature of tissues. Increasing the temperature of tissues can promote relaxation which can relieve tight muscles. Relaxation massage can also reduce muscular tension by breaking down and realigning knotted collagen fibres by applying pressure to break up the adhesive collagen fibre connections.

Relaxation massage can be beneficial to chronic pain. This is pain that has been present for longer than 6 months. These techniques can inhibit the transmission of harmful stimulus to the brain, therefore pain is reduced.

Pregnancy Massage

Prenatal massage has been practiced for years and years to support mothers physically and mentally through their pregnancy. This type of massage will relieve aches and pains, reduce stress and decrease swelling and actually just make you feel good!

If you have any concerns about receiving massage seek advice from a healthcare professional before booking an appointment, but there is generally always something to benefit from if you have a massage and we can have a good chat beforehand to eliminate any of your concerns.

People who should not choose a Pregnancy massage:
• Have a history of miscarriage or high-risk pregnancy.
• Are prone to blood clots.
• are experiencing cramping or bleeding.
• have general contraindications following a C-section.
